According to a survey done by industry website Places.yoga this week, a majority of yoga studio owners worldwide expect over 80% of the yoga studios in their cities to be open by Sept. 1.“This is a resoundingly positive number,” said Eric J. Gerritsen, publisher of Places.yoga. “We polled a global audience of yoga studio owners so this is a very broad snapshot. It indicates that studio owners may have weathered the worst of Covid-19 related challenges, and that better days lie ahead,” said Gerritsen.On the other side of the spectrum only a minority (17%) of yoga studio owners polled said they expected less than 10% of studios in their town to be open by September 1, indicating that much-feared mass studio closings are not widely expected by insiders.Reasons for this upbeat assessment of openings are not necessarily clear yet, but yoga studios have moved quickly to modify their studios to accommodate Covid-19 realities, including spaced out mats, ample hand sanitization supplies, and traffic flow directions on studio floors. As well, it is expected that there will be a significant variance country to country with studio openings as the virus comes under greater or lesser control in different places.“This is clearly a bullish assessment on the yoga studio industry as we move though Covid-19,” said Gerritsen.

As it’s when life becomes uncertain and the ground beneath us feels shaky, that the cultivation of this space deep within ourselves offers a steady and calm refuge that we can retreat to at any time.&nbsp;With parts of the globe now in lockdown for nearly two months, death tolls rising, paycheques thinning, and the topic of mental health becoming centre focus, this is a time, perhaps more than ever, where these ancient practices are needed.&nbsp;The Washington Post recently published a studying indicating that half of Americans have reported that the pandemic is harming their mental health. Likewise, the Office for National Statistics reported a 50% increase in anxiety amongst British people as soon as lockdowns began in mid-March.&nbsp;Anxiety is our body’s natural response to stress. During times of uncertainty, when we do not know what lies ahead, our nervous system is on high alert, ensuring that we’re ready to run or fight when faced with any unknown future threats.&nbsp;Right now, we are living in an unprecedented global pandemic, a time where none of us know what lies ahead. The effect of this on the body and mind can, at times, be crippling. It can manifest in a variety of ways including increased heart rate, physical tension, irritability, difficulty sleeping and feelings of lethargy.&nbsp;The increased mental stress may be taking a toll on your body and mind. Even if your daily demands have decreased, you may be noticing increased fatigue or brain fog. This effect, caused by the accumulation of stress over time, is called <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1197275/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">allostatic load</a>, and causes wear and tear on the body and can result in a feelings of exhaustion.&nbsp;While it can be tempting to shut down and numb out on television or social media, this is actually an incredibly potent time to delve into your yoga practice. Small doses of yoga, pranayama (breath work) and meditation can help re-energize the body, shift mental focus, reduce the effects of stress and create clarity of mind. Even just a few minutes a day can make a world of difference to your mental state.&nbsp;Here are a few simple techniques that can be done on their own or together to help shift your inner environment.&nbsp;Postures:&nbsp;Child’s Pose&nbsp;•&nbsp;&nbsp;Resting on a yoga mat or blanket, bring your big toes towards each other bring your knees slightly wider than the frame of your body•&nbsp;&nbsp;Rest your hips back toward your heels (or place a cushion on your heels for added comfort) and lean forwards, resting your forehead on the floor or a cushion.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Let go of any effort in your arms as you feel the shoulders soften. Make any adjustments you need until you feel comfortable here.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Invite your entire body to relax into the support of the floor.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Take at least five deep breaths, or relax into this pose for up to 5 minutes if you feel comfortable.&nbsp;Standing Forward Fold&nbsp;•&nbsp;&nbsp;Separate your feet about hip-width apart. Spread your toes and take a moment to feel the connection of your feet to the ground•&nbsp;&nbsp;Bend your knees as much as you need so that you can comfortably fold forward.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Let your belly rest on your thighs as you take slow deep breaths.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Catch onto opposite elbows or let your arms hang towards the floor as you relax your head.•&nbsp;&nbsp;If this feel uncomfortable, stand behind a chair and rest your forearms and head onto the top of the chair.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Ensure the knees are bent and the body feels comfortable.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Take 5 - 10 slow, deep breaths.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Slowly roll up body back up to standing. Pause. Spread your toes and again feel your feet firmly rooted to the floor.&nbsp;Bridge Pose•&nbsp;&nbsp;Laying on your back, walk your feet in towards your body. Separate your feet about hip-width apart and press firmly down through the soles of your feet.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Place your palms onto the floor beside your hips.•&nbsp;&nbsp;As you press into your hands and feet, begin to lift your hips up.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Ensure the back of the neck is long as you wiggle your shoulder blades closer together to open through the chest.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Take 5 slow, deep breaths and then slowly unwind your spine back onto the ground.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Repeat 2 more times.•&nbsp;&nbsp;To make this more restorative, place a bolster or a couple of cushions underneath your low back and let your pelvis relax onto the support. You can rest here for about 5 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Legs Up the Wall Pose•&nbsp;&nbsp;This can be done with or without a wall•&nbsp;&nbsp;Simply up into Bridge Pose and slide a bolster, rolled blanket, or a couple of cushions underneath your low back.•&nbsp;&nbsp;Extend your legs up and invite them to relax here.•&nbsp;&nbsp;If you’ve set up near a wall, you can let your heels relax to the wall. The closer your body is to the wall, the more of a stretch you’ll feel through the backs of the legs.•&nbsp;&nbsp;For added relaxation, place an eye pillow or light scarf over your eyes.•&nbsp;&nbsp;If comfortable, relax here for 5 - 15 minutes.•&nbsp;&nbsp;To come out, bend your knees into your chest and take your time to roll onto your left side. Pause here for few breaths before coming up to a seated position.&nbsp;Why these work:&nbsp;Anxiety is created in the mind. By bringing our awareness into our physical body, it creates a grounding and calming effect. These particular postures help to facilitate that sense of grounding while targeting tension in the back, neck and shoulders. As the body relaxes, it makes it easier to take fuller, deeper breaths which helps to soothe the nervous system. By focussing on the body and the physical sensations, it shifts our attention from wandering into the past or future (rumination/worry) and trains us to rest into the present moment with awareness and ease.&nbsp;Breathing Techniques&nbsp;1)&nbsp;Deep Belly Breathing&nbsp;Lay comfortable on your back. Bend your knees, place your feet on the floor and allow your knees to simply fall together. Use any pillow or blankets to get comfortable. Close your eyes and feel your body relax into the floor. Rest your hands on your lower abdomen and begin to slow down and deepen your breath. If comfortable, breathe through your nose. Feel your lower abdomen rise and fall as you breath deep into your body. Invite the breath to become slow and balanced by lengthening the exhale just as much as the inhale. Repeat 10 times and then let your breath relax and take a moment to simply observe how you feel.&nbsp;2)&nbsp;Alternate Nostril Breathing&nbsp;Sit comfortably either on the floor or a chair. Ensure that you can sit up tall while relaxing your shoulders. Close your eyes. Raise your right hand towards your face. Use your thumb to gently press down on your right nostril, temporarily blocking the flow of air. Take a long, slow breath in through your left nostril. With your pinky and ring finger, gently press down on your left nostril and exhale slowly through your right nostril. Inhale through your right nostril, gently block the right and exhale out the left. Repeat 5 - 10x.&nbsp;Why these work:&nbsp;By slowing down the breath, the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated and initiates a relaxation response. Within a few deep, belly breaths, the heart rate and blood pressure slow down, muscles relax, and all of the systems of the body begin to move towards a state of balance.&nbsp;When we consistently refocus our wandering minds onto the breath, we weaken the neural pathways associated with worrying thoughts, which, often are the source of anxiety.&nbsp;Gratitude Meditation&nbsp;Sit comfortably, either on a chair on a cushion. Ensure you’re positioning yourself in such a way that your spine is tall and your shoulder, legs and hips can relax.Take a few slow, deep breaths. With each exhale, invite your body to relax a little more.Allow the breath to return to a natural, comfortable rhythm and simply observe your breath.Each time you become distracted by thought, gently direct your attention back to your breath.Bring your awareness to your heart.Bring into your awareness the people in your life. Focus on one person you feel grateful for. In your mind’s eye, focus on this person and allow feelings of gratitude to swell in your heart.Let the thoughts go and simply rest into the sensations that you feel for a few moments.&nbsp;Bring into your awareness to any recent situations or experiences that you are grateful for.Allow those feelings of gratitude to swell and fill your heart.Once again, let the thoughts go and simply rest into the sensations that you feel.&nbsp;Reflect on any personal qualities you possess that you appreciate.Focus on and feel these qualities as you extend gratitude for your own being.Allow those feelings of gratitude to swell and fill your heart.Take a few moments to rest into what you feel.&nbsp;Take a few deep breaths.Bring the awareness back into your body.Slowly open your eyes.&nbsp;Why this works:&nbsp;Neuroplasticity tells us that we strengthen the neural pathways that we use the most. According to a survey done by industry website Places.yoga this week, the leading (51.2%) change that yoga studios should make to yogis feel comfortable coming back to studios is to offer “smaller classes where social distancing can be practiced.”The results answered the question: “What do yoga studios need to do to make customers feel comfortable about coming back to the studio?”Other key findings from the survey, sent to thousands of yogis and studio owners worldwide this week, indicate further that yogis want studio owners to “Publish Covid-19 policies on hygiene and conduct” (43.5%); have yogis “bring their own props and mats” (43.5%); and want studios to maintain 2M/6 foot separation of mats in the studio space (43.5%). (Numbers do not equal 100% as respondents could choose multiple answers).“These findings suggest that clear steps need to be made by studios to welcome yogis back in the weeks and months ahead as lockdown orders are relaxed in different countries,” said Eric J. Gerritsen, Publisher of Places.yoga.Interestingly, only a clear minority (10.2%) would want to have instructors and yogis wear masks and a further minority (20.5%) would want to see temperature and other health checks at each yoga class check in.As far as online taking away from studio business, 17.9% of respondents said they would no longer be going to studios and would practice online instead.“This online number is good news for physical studio owners in that a large majority of yogis want to come back to studios, assuming certain adjustments are in place,” said Gerritsen. “The online number further suggests that new opportunities are opening up for entrepreneurial yoga teachers and studios developing their online offerings during the Covid-19 crisis,” he added.
